HOW TO REQUEST AN IRS VERIFICATION OF NON-FILING LETTER

You may request a letter online, by phone, or by paper request with IRS Form 4506-T.  If you have never filed taxes, you need to request the letter by mail by using the 4506-T form. You will typically receive the letter in 5-10 days depending on the method you use to request.

How to request a letter of non-filing online:

  1. Visit the IRS website
  2. Click “Get Transcript Online”
  3. Follow step-by-step instructions to create an account or log in to your current account if you created one in the past.
  4. Select tax year “2020” if you are turning in documents for 2022-2023. Select tax year “2021” if you are turning in documents for 2023-2024.
  5. Request “Verification of Non-filing Letter”
  6. You can download the form and/or print it out at this point. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person along with any other requested documents.

How to request a letter of non-filing by phone:

  1. Call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946
  2. Follow prompts to enter Social Security Number and street address (typically the address you used on last tax return you filed)
  3. Select option 2 – IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter
  4. You should receive the letter by mail, typically within 5-10 days. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person along with any other requested documents.

How to request a letter of non-filing through the mail:

  1. Download IRS form 4506-T
  2. Complete lines 1-4 of the form. (Leave field #5 blank. All letters should be mailed to your personal address.)
  3. Line 7: Select the checkbox on the right for “Verification of Non-filing”
  4. Line 9: In the year or period requested field, enter “12/31/2020” for financial aid year 2022-2023 or enter “12/31/2021” for financial aid year 2023-2024.
  5. Sign and date form, then mail or fax the completed 4506-T form to the address or fax provided on page 2
  6. You should receive the letter by mail, typically within 5-10 days. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person along with any other requested documents.

HOW TO REQUEST A TAX TRANSCRIPT

When requesting a tax transcript online or by phone, the primary taxpayer (the first person listed on the tax return) must make the request. Visit our tax Information for student financial aid applications for more information.

How to request a tax transcript online:

  1. Visit the IRS website
  2. Click on “Get Your Tax Record”, then click on “Get Transcript Online”.
  3. Follow step-by-step instructions to create an account or log in to your current account if you created one in the past.
  4. When asked to select a reason you need a transcript, select “higher education/student aid”
  5. Select Return Transcript for “2020” for financial aid year 2022-2023. Select Return Transcript for “2021” for financial aid year 2023-2024.
  6. You can download the form and/or print it out at this point. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person along with any other requested documents.

How to request a tax transcript by phone:

  1. Call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946
  2. Follow prompts to enter Social Security Number and street address (typically the address you used on last tax return you filed)
  3. Select tax return transcript by pressing 1, then enter “2020” for financial aid year 2022-2023 or “2021” for financial aid year 2023-2024. Press 1 to confirm.
  4. You should receive the letter by mail, typically within 5-10 days. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person along with any other requested documents.

How to request a tax transcript by mail: 

  1. Download IRS form 4506-T
  2. Complete lines 1-4 of the form. (Leave field #5 blank. All letters should be mailed to your personal address.)
  3. Line 6a: check the box on the right for “Return Transcript”
  4. Line 9: In the year or period requested field, enter “12/31/2020” for financial aid year 2022-2023 or enter “12/31/2021” for financial aid year 2023-2024.
  5. Sign and date form, then mail or fax the completed 4506-T form to the address or fax provided on page 2

You should receive the letter by mail, typically within 10-15 days. Submit the letter to the Financial Aid by email, fax, or in-person.
